Sponsorship

Faye “The Grenade” Blount

Varlowe Industrial Services have sponsored Faye Blount, better known as The Grenade, who is an extremely talented Martial Arts fighter from Wolverhampton.

Faye’s been training kickboxing for 2 years this October, which she has taken to it like a duck to water and puts every effort into every lesson. In the first 3 months she travelled to France to take part in championships and since then has gone from strength to strength. Entering competitions across the country, she has won two Southern area title belts, two English titles, over ten trophies and medals, but most importantly, always leaving the ring with valuable lessons to take into the next bout.

To keep on top of her game, Faye trains 5/6 days per week, honing her skills and learning different practices of fighting styles. She started training just kickboxing, but now also trains k1, boxing and Muay Thai, with each style having its own disciplines which helps in and out the ring. Being well versed in multiple arts enables Faye to dominate the competition, continually adding to her already impressive achievements.

As part of our local sponsorship program, Varlowe and BJH are proud to be apart of Faye’s journey. We will keep you updated on Faye’s progress here, but you can also check out The Grenades Facebook page here.

As always, we wish Faye the best of luck in each venture of her career.

F1 In Schools

Jaguar Primary School Challenge – Regional Finals

10:00 hrs – 23/05/17 – RAF Cosford

As proud sponsors of Perry Halls F1 in Schools team, we quickly accepted the invitation to watch the regional finals held at the iconic RAF Cosford Museum.

Nestled in between a Pave Low Helicopter and several other historic aircraft, was 12 displays by 12 individual teams of primary school children.

They all had one thing in common, to win the F1 In Schools challenge hosted by Jaguar Land Rover. (For details of the challenge, please visit the “Next Generation Engineers” post)

We were amazed at the level of detail that the pupils had put in, from the portfolios and pit displays to the final design of the cars they had built to race.

Countless hours’ worth of work in CAD and CAM programs came down to this day, the Regional Final.

The winner of this stage will advance to the National final, so there was a lot at stake.

Judge & Jury

The judging criteria are into several categories: Pit Display & Portfolio, Verbal Presentation, Specification, Engineering, and finally, the car’s speed on the track.

Each of these categories has judging teams who use key performance indicators to award points to the groups: pit Display, Portfolio, Verbal Presentation, Specification, and Engineering.

We took the opportunity to follow the judging panel round to each team. Hearing how the pupils talked about how they tested different designs, choosing the team names and branded their vehicles was inspiring. It showed how the project had helped them develop new skills.

The judging took us through lunchtime.

Go Go Go!!

After a well-deserved bite to eat, we returned to the iconic Pave Low, where we saw the Jaguar Land Rover team had set the track up.

It consisted of a two-lane, elevated drag-strip, complete with start and finish lines. There were two triggers and a launch system at the start line in front of a countdown and timed grid board. The board displayed counters for reaction times and overall drag time.

The Jaguar Land Rover team then attaches tiny gas canisters when they were ready to race and then attached to the track by nylon wire.

When everything is setup ready, the start board is lit up, and the countdown begins. Just like the Formula 1, when the lights go out its go go go!

It takes around 1.2 seconds for the cars to fly down the 20-meter strip to the finish line, followed by a roar of cheers from each of the school’s teams.

Each team raced each other using the reaction racing mechanism twice in each lane.

Awards anybody?

After the race had finished, all the day’s scores are tallied up, and the winners announced in the presentation room.

Every judging category had a winner, then a final 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

The overall winner was the one going through to the National finals.

The room fell silent as the judges started to call up the winners of the earlier judging categories.

Unfortunately, Perry Hall School didn’t make it into the national finals. However, they did win the Pit Display and Portfolio award. A big congratulations and a brilliant first year at the F1 in Schools challenge.

To wrap up

Overall, the day was brilliant, and all teams had done an outstanding job and shown a passion for engineering.

The Jaguar Land Rover team has set up a fantastic project that pushes the children into new learning areas and a glimpse of real-world experience. Putting them in groups with other children they hadn’t spoken to before brought some of the shyer children out of their shell.

We want to say thank you to Perry Hall School, especially Danielle, for allowing us to be involved in such a fantastic project.

Also, thank you to Mrs Mees for inviting us down to the regional finals, and last but not least, the Jaguar Land Rover team for their hospitality.

Walsall Academy – Nepal Everest Base Camp 2017

GM Design Solutions, A close friend of ours, contacted us regarding his youngest son who is off to Nepal for a 3 week expedition to Everest Base Camp. He was seeking sponsorship to help raise £4500 to cover the cost of the trip and some of his equipment. Organised by Walsall Academy, the trip aims to gain new experiences and challenges they have to tackle and overcome. A journey like this, for most of us, is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so naturally, we were happy to help.

Everest Expedition 2017

Setup and operated by Outlook Expeditions, they will guide the team up to the Everest Base Camp, a mere 5,300m up! Over the 21 day expedition, not only will they see some breath-taking views, they will also visit local towns and take part in projects to help give something back to the community. Encouraging them to embrace new cultures, meet new people as well as gaining a huge sense of achievement.

Birthplace of Buddha and home of Everest, the tiny kingdom of Nepal is the greatest adventure paradise of all! Discover the charms of Kathmandu, experience kindly tea-houses, meditate in magnificent monasteries, trek in the shadows of the world’s highest mountains, barter in bazaars and wear out your boots on dusty, yak-trodden trails! Next Generation Engineers

Encouraging the “Next Generation” engineers

Perry Hall School in Wednesfield recently contacted Varlowe regarding a project they had been looking to participate in.

They are currently looking for sponsorship to help them to participate in the F1 in Schools Challenge hosted by Jaguar Land Rover.

Being a local school and one that our Admin Coordinator, Tami, attended when she was younger, we jumped at the chance to get involved.

What is F1 In Schools?

F1 in Schools – Jaguar Primary School Challenge (F1-JPSC) involves designing and manufacturing the fastest car possible.

The aim is to emulate the engineering companies’ design and engineering processes, such as Jaguar Cars.

The Challenge is open to students aged 5-11 years old. It is a fantastic way of getting young people involved in engineering.

Opportunities like this encourage Pupils to –

  • Take part in a fun hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths activity
  • Experience real-life problem solving and learning
  • Develop design, manufacturing, teamwork, communication & business skills
  • Take part in a UK Nationwide challenge

The F1 In Schools – Jaguar Primary School Challenge is sponsored and supported by Jaguar Land Rover Cars.

Jaguar and Varlowe Industrial Services understand the need to encourage and motivate young people to develop critical skills needed for the future.

The Challenge

The students’ Challenge was to form a team of 4 pupils and design a race car out of the card, complete with wheels, a body, and a mini driver.

They will design and manufacture a body shell to fit a standard chassis using template software.

Then they will need to print and cut their designs onto the card and then make their car ready to race.

The four pupils each will have a role to fulfil, Team Manager, Manufacturing Engineer, Design Engineer and Graphic Designer.

Regional finals will be held through the regional school hubs from March through to May 2017, with the UK National Final taking place at the end of June 2017.

For more information regarding the Challenge, please visit http://www.f1inschools.co.uk/primary/.

We are over the moon to be involved in such an innovative project and helping a local school introduce engineering to young pupils.

A Special Mention…

As you know, a few months back we backed and supported a Crowdfunded campaign called “Light up Wednesfield“. This was lead by a community group called Hands On Wednesfield who wanted to make a change to the Christmas lights down Wednesfield high street. Aiming to raise £4000 to make this happen, they turned to the local community to help support this cause and had a terrific response, raising over a thousand pound more than their target.

Therefore, this year’s Wednesfield Christmas light switch event is going to be bigger and better than ever before. Starting at 2pm on Thursday 24th November, you can expect to see acts such as a Flash Mob dance act from Flexus Dance Collective, Fire Breathing, Christmas carols, Rides, Charity Markets and the Rotary Clubs legendary Santa on his sleigh. The main lights switch on is happening at 5pm with Signal 107 and the Mayor Of Wolverhampton.

For more information and for a full running order of the events happening on the 24th of November, click here www.wv11.co.uk. There is also a Facebook event page which you can join here.

We also would like to say a big thank you to James from wv11.co.uk for a special mention of Varlowe in a radio interview with Signal 107. Also a massive thank you to Simon at Wednesfield magazine for the brilliant advertisements in the Wednesfield magazine and the Wednesfield Christmas Lights Switch on 2016 brochure, which will be given out on the night. You can listen to the whole interview below.

See you there :-)
