CNC Milling Service

Varlowe Industrial Services offers a CNC Milling service based out of our Wolverhampton head office.

Our engineers are experts in creating machined parts using the latest CNC milling techniques. They can help you choose suitable materials and methods for your project to offer the best experience possible.

From one-off prototypes to high-volume production, we can create components from a wide range of materials, including Aluminium, Brass, Carbon Steel, Copper, Mild Steel and Stainless Steel.

Our ISO 9001 certification assures quality from start to finish.

What Is CNC Milling?

CNC milling machines are responsible for transforming the machine shop. They can mass-produce complex components faster, with more precision than traditional methods.

The subtractive form of manufacturing can produce more, at faster speeds. The process has good part-to-part repeatability. Because of this, it makes the process ideal for high-volume manufacturing.

The CNC milling machine makes use of computer-assisted controls. Enabling precise movements to rotate and position the cutting tools. The machine moves along the three primary axes, X, Y, and Z.

The process starts with a computer-aided design (CAD) model of the final component. We then use computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software so the machine can read the drawings. The CNC milling machine can then start the procedure.

Milling Methods

The most common methods are –

  • Plain milling (slab milling or surface milling). Plain milling is on a flat surface with the axis of the cutting tool parallel to the surface.
  • Face milling. Face milling is essentially positioned “face down” towards the top of the workpiece.
  • Angular milling. This milling method is at an angle to the workpiece surface to produce angular cuts.
  • Form milling. Form milling makes cuts such as contours, curves, and radii.

CNC milling machines can have different spindle configurations. Each configuration can move the workpiece in different ways. These are –

  • Horizontal Milling: A spindle with a horizontally mounted cutting tool pressed against the workpiece.
  • Vertical milling: A vertically-oriented spindle moves a rotating cutting tool up and down.
  • Multi-axis milling: 4-axis and 5-axis mills facilitate highly detailed or complex machine operations.
